He Is Legend

When He Is Legend signed to Solid State Records, the band had already stirred a blaring buzz all their own. But they were just getting started. 2004 put He Is Legend on the map and on the move. In June, the five North Carolina natives released their debut EP, 91025 with Tribunal Records, a label most noted for helping launch the careers of bands like Atreyu and From Autumn to Ashes. The release received rave reviews, stirring the anticipation even further for He Is Legend’s debut full-length album, I Am Hollywood, released November 2nd, 2004.

Their sophomore album, Suck Out The Poison, was released on October 3rd, 2006, featuring more raspy vocals. It received mixed reviews from long-time fans due to a major difference in vocalist Schuylar Croom’s vocals and is still disputed to this day.

In 2009, He Is Legend announced that they will be taking a musical sabbatical in the forest surrounding North Carolina recording studio, Warrior Sound Studio. They also claimed that the material written during this hiatus will be used to create a record “literally made of solid gold (figuratively speaking). The bands latest album, It Hates You was released on July 21, 2009.

*The bands roots reach back into the late 1990’s when Adam Tanbouz, Steven Bache, Matt Williams, guitarist McKenzie Bell, and vocalist Schuyler Croom began writing and performing around Wilmington, NC. In 2003, having previously played under the names of Stronghold, No One Wins, and The Uriah Omen, the name He Is Legend was adopted by members Tanbouz, Bache, Bell, Croom, and Williams. After releasing their first EP in June of 2004 entitled 91025, the band signed on with Solid State Records and released their first full length album in November. I Am Hollywood was a massive success and the band immediately began to experience a surge in popularity that extended far beyond their NC roots. After almost two years of extensive touring in the United States and Europe, the band temporarily relocated to California to record their next release. Suck Out the Poison was released on October 3, 2006 and triggered mixed reviews from long-time fans. It was evident, however, that the band believed firmly in the album and as a result were largely indifferent to often cruel criticisms from offended fans. Their confident, care-free response is portrayed in their music video “Attack of the Dungeon Witch” which was released in March of 2007. Soon after the release of Suck Out the Poison, guitarist McKenzie Bell left the band without explanation and was eventually replaced by guitarist Mitch Marlow (previously of Classic Case). Bell later joined the band Bloodjinn. In February 2008, it was announced that Mitch Marlow was no longer a member of He Is Legend, and would be replaced with Worth Weaver. Marlow is now playing guitar for Filter.

Debates abouts whether or not He Is Legend is a Christian group have been fueled by the fact that Solid State Records is a Christian record label. While Croom and other members of the band have claimed to be followers of Christ, the band has made it clear that they are not collectively a Christian band in the FAQ section on their website saying that, “We are in no way a Christian band… We all enjoy music, we all enjoy playing our instruments, so if we had to be classified as anything it would be a ‘band’ band or ‘music’ band.”

He Is Legend has confirmed that they are not nor ever have been a christian and have since left Solid-State records for NC based Tragic Hero Records.

Drive Like Jehu

San DiegoUnited States (1990 – 1995)

Drive Like Jehu were an American  band from San Diego, California, greatly influenced by American acts such as Sonic YouthFugaziMission of BurmaSlintWipersBlack Flag and Honor Role, as well as German Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu!, and Italian film composer Ennio Morricone.

Drive Like Jehu was founded in 1990 in San Diego by Rick Froberg (guitar, vocals), John Reis (guitar),Mike Kennedy (bass), and Mark Trombino (drums).

Froberg and Reis had originally played in Pitchfork, but despite musical similarities, there were some significant changes in the lineup of Drive Like Jehu. Froberg, no longer just a vocalist, picked up a guitar, while Kennedy and Trombino formed the rhythm section of the new band after having played together in Night Soil Man, a prog-influenced punk outfit.

The group released their self-titled debut album on Cargo in 1991. The following year, they released the double a-side single, Hand Over Fist/Bullet Train To Vegas on Merge Records, and released the original recorded version of Sinews on the Headstart to Purgatory compilation of San Diego bands.

Drive Like Jehu and Rocket From The Crypt (a garage-punk band fronted by Reis) were signed to Interscope Records as a pair, with the label releasing Drive Like Jehu’s second album, Yank Crime, in 1994 after which the band embarked on tours of the United States and Europe.

Drive Like Jehu played their final shows in 1995 with little fanfare. While John Reis concentrated onRocket From The Crypt full-time, Froberg and Trombino would both eventually leave San Diego. Froberg briefly played in Thingy with Rob Crow (of Pinback) before moving to New York City to work as an illustrator. Kennedy went back to school and became a chemist, while Trombino, who engineered most of the band’s recordings, became a audio engineer and producer for the likes of Blink 182 and Jimmy Eat World, among others.

Since the breakup, Reis continued to front Rocket From The Crypt until 2005, whilst working on other projects including Back Off CupidsSultans, and starting his own record label, Swami Records.

In 2000, Froberg and Reis reunited to form Hot Snakes, who released three full-lengths on Swami before retiring in the summer of 2005.

In 2007, Reis formed The Night Marchers with former Hot Snakes bandmates Gar Wood and Jason Kourkounis, releasing their debut album, See You In Magic earlier this year.

Fear Before the March of Flames)

Aurora, Denver COUnited States (2002 – present)

Fear Before the March of Flames (now known as Fear Before) is an / band that formed in Aurora, Colorado in 2002.

Hiatus
Fear Before played their last show on December 4, 2009 at the Crabtree Brewing Company in Greeley, CO. After close to 18 months of silence from the band, guitarist Adam Rupert posted a message on the band’s Facebook stating an indefinite hiatus. Several days later Adam made another statement making it clear that the band has not broken up.

History
Their initial sound carried out on their first two records was closer to a melding of , and , drawing influence from the likes of ConvergeThe Blood Brothers, and Botch. Some even considered them during this time period to be  because of their technical riffs and song structure.

They released their debut album, Odd How People Shake, in 2003 on Rise Records, and after gaining some notoriety, were signed to EQUAL VISION RECORDS, who re-released their debut in the January 2004. Their debut was primarily in the vein of post-hardcore, featuring a mix of screamed vocals on the part of David Marion and clean singing provided by Adam Fisher. The instrumental work on Odd How People Shake is best described as typical of that of most melodic metalcore artists of the day, and it is rumoured that every song on the album is based on a movie (“Sarah Goldfarb, Where are Your Manners?”, for example, is supposedly about Requiem for a Dream, while on their sophomore album, Art Damage, “The Story of the Curious Oysters” has more to do with the Disney movie, Alice in Wonderland). It is interesting and worth noting that the band’s cover art on all three of their albums feature skyscrapers.

Their sophomore album, Art Damage, was released on Equal Vision Records in September 2004, and was a marked change in direction for the band. Art Damage as an album was much heavier and darker than their debut; the band left behind the relative simplicity and, arguably, tiredness of the instrumental work of their debut in favor of the abrasiveness characterizing bands such as Converge and Every Time I Die. In addition, virtually all of the vocals are screamed, with the exception of an odd chorus or verse.

The critical consensus seems to favor their new direction, and in concert, the band plays few if any songs from their debut. On their website, they explicitly state that they will not play one song in particular from their debut, “On the Brightside, She Could Choke;” interestingly enough, this song also has the most prominent elements of  of all the songs in their catalogue, which could be one of the reasons they have grown so adverse to playing it.

Their new album, The Always Open Mouth, was released on Tuesday, September 19, 2006. This album marks a considerably different sound from previous recordings. This album contains a much more experimental side, such as more emphasis on antiphony between the lead singer and guitarist and a considerable lesser amount of screaming. It features layered guitar chords (a second guitarist was added to the band before the recording of this album), and many electronic sounds used with heavily-distorted or otherwise-effected guitars and synthesizers, or sequencers and drum machines, giving it a more  feel. As a result, it is not as hard or fast as their previous two albums, but instead, is more experimental and well-crafted.

With newly added members and a new approach at performing music, they set off on numerous tours mid-2006 to promote their latest CD The Always Open Mouth, touring with bands such as Thursday,The Number Twelve Looks Like YouHeavyHeavyLowLowThe Jonbenet, and the Radio Rebellion Tour with bands The Fully DownThe ConfessionblessthefallMisery SignalsBetween the Buried and Me, and headliners of the tour Norma Jean. During a show on November 4th in San Diego, California, bassist Mike Madruga accidentally hit singer Dave Marion on the side of his face with the headstock of his bass, knocking him unconscious on stage. When he awoke, there was a hole that went all the way through his cheek, and although the band continued to finish the set, he had to be rushed to the hospital to be treated for the injury, and because of this, the band missed the following 3 days of the tour, but Dave is now fine and has finished the rest of the Radio Rebellion Tour.

Dead Poetic

Dead Poetic was a post-hardcore band hailing from Dayton, Ohio. The band first garnered attention in the underground music scene following the release of their first full-length Four Wall Blackmail which was released by Tooth & Nail subsidiary Solid State Records, and single “August Winterman.”

In the fall of 2004 personal disagreements within the band caused bassist Chad Shellabarger, drummer Josh Shellabarger, and guitarist Todd Osborn to all depart the band, and Dead Poetic appeared to be a thing of the past. But remaining members Brandon Rike (vocals) and Zach Miles (guitar) began playing with accomplished drummer Jesse Sprinkle (formerly of Poor Old Lu and Demon Hunter; also the brother of Aaron Sprinkle) and their passion for music reignited. Beloved alums Dusty Redmon (guitar) and John Brehm (bass) came on board to round out the new, revamped version of Dead Poetic…

Shortly before the release of third album, Vices, lead singer Brandon Rike left the band. This was the trigger to the break up of Dead Poetic. Guitarist Dusty Redmon confirmed the band’s disbanding on absolutepunk.net in September 2007:

“When Brandon left the band back in October (before “Vices” came out), a lot of big stuff was going on. We had great tour plans, a batch of new songs we were in to, and just kind of a new sense of freshness about the band. Brandon had been sort of “over it” for a long time, and just sort of picked a bad time to bail. He loves doing design, and being hang-out-at-home-type of husband, which is cool. I kind of called “NOT IT” when it came to making an announcement, but I guess so did everyone else. T&N put a lot of initial money into the record, only to see the band fall apart before the release, causing them to basically drop the entire promotion campaign. Sorry to those who were led on by thinking we were still active. Jesse is recording, Brandon is designing, John is tattooing, Zach just had a new baby, and I’m playing in the Almost.”

On October 30, 2007, Jesse Sprinkle posted a MySpace bulletin reiterating that the band was still indeed together. “Contrary to popular opinion and the mighty Wikipedia, Dead Poetic has not broken up. We are still a band indeed…we figured we’d post it to the public…we assure you that Dead Poetic is alive.” He went on to say that the band’s label, Tooth and Nail, would be releasing a “Best Of” album for Dead Poetic in the near future, and that the band hopes to start writing songs for a new record very soon.

Jawbreaker

San Francisco, California, United States (1988 – 1996)

Jawbreaker was an American  band from San Francisco, California, United States. The band has its root in Los Angeles, CA, where Blake Schwarzenbach and Adam Pfahler were students at the exclusive private Crossroads High School. The band came together when they met Chris Bauermeister at New York University in 1988.

With Schwarzenbach on guitar and vocals, Bauermeister on bass, and Pfahler on drums, the band gained recognition in the late eighties and early nineties for their melodic yet driven sound built on the foundation for Schwarzenbach’s poignant, bleeding-heart lyrics and signature rasp.

The band’s first full-length release Unfun was put out by Shredder in 1990. On this, the band stuck close to the sound coming out of their contemporaries in the nascent  scene in their sound, with the exception of Bauermeister’s prominent bass lines and Schwarzenbach’s lyrics, at times walking the line of the melodramatic.

Unfun was followed by Bivouac on Tupelo/Communion in 1992. Bivouac proved thicker and darker - both thematically and melodically - yet served to elevate the band above a crowd of previously similar acts. This more ambitious release also artfully used pieces of found-audio, in what was becoming one of the band’s signatures, weaving it in and out of the ten minute title track, “Bivouac.”

Their third release, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, produced by the ubiquitous Steve Albini, unveiled a sparse pop-punk with more carefully crafted lyrics. This album also holds what has become arguably their best known song, “Boxcar.”

Jawbreaker had seemed poised for critical and commercial success by the time of their fourth, and last album, Dear You. Despite a vigorous marketing push, Jawbreaker’s album sales were anemic in the wake of a post-Green Day market, and was one of the causes leading to the end of the band’s career in 1996.

The group recently reacquired the rights to Dear You and have successfully put the long out-of-print album back into circulation on Pfahler’s label, Blackball Records.

The band’s cult status as the definitive nineties proto-pop-punk band has grown since its breakup, and songs like “Kiss the Bottle” and “Jet Black” are referenced as influences by bands such as Sparta, Lucero, and Rocky Votolato. In 2003, a Jawbreaker tribute album, Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault was released on Dying Wish Records, and featured covers by 18 bands including Fall Out BoyNerf Herder,Sparta, and Face To Face.

Singer Blake Schwarzenbach went on to form the New York City-based band Jets To Brazil, who have also since broken up, and is now an adjunct English professor at Hunter College (CUNY). In the fall of 2008, he debuted his new band, Thorns of Life, formed with Aaron Cometbus of Crimpshrine andPinhead Gunpowder on drums and ex-Gr’Ups bassist Daniela Sea.

Drummer Adam Pfahler is currently drumming in San Francisco-based Whysall Lane, whose LP was released in 2006 on his own Blackball Records.

Bassist Chris Bauermeister has been playing in post-hardcore band Horace Pinker and pop-punk bandShorebirds, which was formed with Matt Canino, formerly of Latterman; Shorebirds split in the summer of 2008.
