Eyes Set To Kill

A White Lotus traditionally represents a rebirth. Just like the beautiful flower, Eyes Set To Kill has gone through a metamorphosis. After years of being forced to conceal their aspirations, the Phoenix, Arizona-based collective finally reveal their true identity on their upcoming fourth studio album appropriately entitled White Lotus.

“It’s a symbolic name,” Alexia Rodriguez states. “We have a clear mind set, we have purity and we know exactly what we want to do with our music. We know who we are and where we want to go, and so we wanted to use a white lotus to symbolize how confident and focused we are. It’s a leap for us because we have a clearer vision of what we want.”

Down to a more concentrated four-piece, Eyes Set To Kill slowly drowned out their screamo vibe and have transformed into a metal band led by Rodriguez’s piercing vocal prowess. Tie that in with stellar musicianship, mature songwriting and an adrenaline-charged resonance, and it’s clear this explosive quartet is on the verge of redefining the genre.

Those sentiments are further backed up by smash singles like “The Secrets Between,” a heavy single about withholding the truth from a significant other; “Forget,” an intense ditty about the desire to erase your memory from terrible experience with an ex-lover; and “Where I Wanna Be,” a love song with a dark edge.

It’s a new and improved style, and they’ve spent years getting to this point.

Formed in 2003 by the Rodriguez sisters, Eyes Set To Kill’s passionate music connected with fans early on and led them to becoming one of MySpace.com’s top unsigned screamo bands in 2006. The group signed with BreakSilence/Suburban Noize Records the following year and release three critically acclaimed studio efforts – 2008’s Reach, 2009’s The World Outside and 2011’s Broken Frames.

Frustrated with the label politics, and pressure to withhold their identity, Eyes Set To Kill decided to break away and become the band they were destined to be. The metal quartet will independently release White Lotus through a joint venture between their own imprint Forsee Records and Maphia Entertainment.

Eyes Set To Kill is making a career on their terms and the versatile White Lotus is a testament to their craft. “I’ve found that the more unique people are, the more unique their tastes are gonna be,” Rodriguez says. “So I think people that are diverse and are into all types of music, they’ll like this album because it’s diverse, but a lot heavier.”

Now, it’s time for this White Lotus to bloom.

The Blood Brothers

Seattle, Washington, United States (1997 – 2007)

The Blood Brothers were an American  band formed in Seattle, Washington, United Stateson September 27, 1997, who officially announced their breakup in October 2007. Their music combined influences with an  edge and abstract lyrics. Members were: Jordan Blilie (vocals),Johnny Whitney (vocals), and Morgan Henderson (bass), along with Waxwing’s Cody Votolato (guitar) and Mark Gajadhar (drums).

The band was considered unusual in that it had two dedicated lead vocalists. In addition to this, Cody and Morgan performed back-up vocals. Later albums (…Burn, Piano Island, Burn and especially Crimes) featured a degree of experimental instrumentation: Morgan often deviated from bass to add a second guitar or synthesiser, and also utilized a sampler. Johnny added piano/Wurlitzer to many more songs, a process which actually began on “Time for Tenderness” from This Adultery Is Ripe. He has claimed he always wanted to incorporate such instruments into the Blood Brothers’ sound, but only on signing with a major label prior to …Burn, Piano Island, Burn did he have the means to do this.

The band has been described as  and even  and (see Alternative Press Issue from October 2005). In small circles discussions of the band related with the concept that they have influences from the  punk scene of the 1980’s. The band made wide use of various punk/hardcore vocal styles (i.e. screaming) and instrumentation (i.e., fast drumming and plentiful power chords).

While two ‘lead’ vocalists produced a unique spectacle, the on stage aura they produced was due in great part to the band’s musicality. Blilie and Whitney’s voices tended to overlap in the style of punk guitar rhythm/lead arrangements. The two vocalists contrasted each other to good effect: Whitney’s voice was generally accepted to have evolved from the slurred, venomous drawl on This Adultery Is Ripe to the insanely high-pitched squeals (“like a child being tortured”) heard on Crimes, while Blilie’s maintained the same low, robust ferocity throughout so that his screams continue to stand out in much of their material.

Whitney performed vocals for the now defunct Soiled Doves. Whitney is now a part of Jaguar Love with other ex-Blood Brothers member Cody Votolato and Pretty Girls Make Graves’ Jay Clark. In August 2007 Mark Gajadhar and ‘Pearl Dragon’ joined together to create a pop/hip-hop act by the name ofChampagne Champagne. Jordan Blilie, Mark Gajadhar and Morgan Henderson formed the band Past Lives in late 2007, with original Blood Brothers guitarist Devin Welch.

Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows

Pontiac, Detroit MIUnited States (2010 – present)

Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (aka D.R.U.G.S.) are a  supergroup created by Craig Owens in 2010 in Pontiac, Michigan. They released their debut album D.R.U.G.S. on February 22, 2011.

The band’s members were originally announced in several YouTube video updates on Craig Owens’ channel. The band’s original lineup was Craig Owens (ex-ChiodosCinematic SunriseIsles & Glaciers), Matt Good (ex-From First To Last), Aaron Stern (ex-Matchbook Romance), and Nick Martin (ex-UndermindedIsles & Glaciers), with Adam Russel (Story Of The Year) being the band’s latest addition.

The band’s first single, released November 11, 2010, was “If You Think This Song Is About You, It Probably Is.” An official music video was uploaded to the band’s YouTube channel on December 2 with the uncensored, short film version also being made available on their official website. On December 6, 2010, they released their second single, “Mr. Owl Ate My Metal Worm.” With these two songs being the band’s only official singles, they went on their Rise From the Ashes Tour across North America withEyes Set To Kill and New Medicine.

The next single released was “Sex Life” and “My Swagger Has A First Name” was also released to all those who pre-ordered the album. The album was finally released through Decaydance/Sire Records.

They then went on a UK tour from March 4-10, played at SXSW on March 16, and joined the 2011 AP Tour headlined by Black Veil Brides with supporting bands I See StarsVersaEmerge, and Conditions, which ran from March 18 to April 29.

On July 12, a live EP Live From Hot Topic was released. This EP is a recording of their performance at the Hot Topic headquarters on December 3, 2010, which would be the band’s second ever show - their second official gig was also scheduled the same day at The Key Club.

On January 18th, 2012 the band made this announcement: "It is with bittersweet sentiment that we announce some news today. Our bass player, Adam Russell, has made the personal decision to move on from Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows to pursue other opportunities. While we are happy to see him make a choice that will ultimately be best for him, of course, we are sad to see him go. Please know that we remain close friends and supporters of Adam, and that there are no hard feelings. Rest assured this will not affect our current tour schedule. Our close friend, Tai “Never Wrong, Always” Wright, will be filling in on bass duties on the upcoming SIN Tour which starts Thursday in Chicago."

Quicksand

Quicksand was an American post-hardcore band from New York City founded in 1990 by singer/songwriter Walter Schreifels. Their debut self-titled EP was followed by two major label albums, Slip and Manic Compression. Quicksand separated for the first time in 1995, ultimately disbanding in 1999 following a failed year-and-a-half reunion.

Formation
The musicians who would come to form Quicksand had their roots in the New York Hardcore scene. Frontman/guitarist Walter Schreifels, the main creative force behind the Gorilla Biscuits as well as serving as bassist for Youth of Today, assembled the band's line-up from his dissolved Moondog project. Guitarist Tom Capone had founded Long Island's Beyond (releasing a demo and LP via Combined Effort Records) and had previously played in Bold, writing their album Looking Back. Drummer Alan Cage had been in the experimental hardcore band Burn and played with Capone in Beyond. Bassist Sergio Vega arrived from the short lived Collapse and a later incarnation of Absolution.

Major Releases and Touring

Quicksand released the 4-track EP "Quicksand" through hardcore independent label Revelation Records six weeks after their formation. The band performed at club venues and rose to touring North America and Europe with HelmetFugaziRage Against the MachineAnthrax, and White Zombie. Their exposure led to a deal with Polydor Records for the release their first full-length, major label album, Slip on 9 February 1993, with "Dine Alone" as their first single. The album also featured two tracks that were re-recorded from the "Quicksand" EP ("Omission" and "Unfulfilled"). The following year saw the band tour the United States with The Offspring, performing 250 live shows to support the album. On 1 January 1995, they released their latter, more successful album Manic Compression on Island Records and later that year rejoined The Offspring on their European tour. Manic Compression reached #135 on the Billboard 200 Chart and #9 on the Heatseakers Chart and garnered Quicksand an invitation to the first Vans Warped Tour. Unfortunately, internal conflict and the stresses of constant touring led to the band's break-up in October 1995 at the height of their success.

Reunion and Unfinished Album

Following Quicksand's initial split, Walter Schreifels started his World's Fastest Car project and did production work for the band CIV.[1] Tom Capone formed Handsome with members of Murphy's Law,Iceburn, and Helmet, releasing a self-titled album in 1997. Sergio Vega began his own solo work with Fully in addition to DJ'ing in New York City and Alan Cage joined the alternative rock bandSeaweed.
During the summer of 1997, the members were rumored to have begun talking about a reunion with the intention of performing on Revelation Night at Brownies during the CMJ Music Conference that September. However, Quicksand's first appearance since their split would have to wait until 6 February 1998 in Osaka on the first leg of a Japanese/Hawaiian mini-tour. In August 1998, they enteredCarriage House Studios in Stamford, Connecticut with producer Steven Haigler to begin recording material written in the last six months. After the band's first North American performance on 26 September 1998 in Boulder, Colorado, they were invited to extend their tour with Deftones and Snapcase and on 3 November 1998 started what was to become their last tour. Quicksand then returned to the studio to continue working on the new album; despite the recent successful tour and a more collaborative effort in the writing process, resurfaced tensions would eventually split up the band indefinitely in the autumn of 1999 and doom the material to remain officially unreleased.

Post-Quicksand Activities

Walter Schreifels went on to form the alternative rock band Rival Schools with former band mate and CIV drummer Sammy Siegler, releasing the album United by Fate in 2001 (before splitting in 2003). Schreifels later fronted Walking Concert on his independent record label Some Records. Along the way, Schreifels mixed in occasional solo acoustic performances. In 2008 Rival Schools reformed, performing live at various festivals, and released their sophomore album Pedals in 2011. Tom Capone played guitar for Instruction for the majority of the band's existence beginning in December 2002. Sergio Vega has played bass on tour for Deftones, filling in for Chi Cheng in 1999 and 2009, and was recruited in June 2009 to compose their album Diamond Eyes, released on 4 May 2010. Alan Cage contributed to Enemy's Hooray for Dark Matter in 2005 and later worked with New Idea Society and the hardcore band 108.
