Chiodos

Davison MIUnited States (2001 – present)

Chiodos is an American post-hardcore band from Davison, Michigan, formed in 2001. Originally known as “The Chiodos Bros.” the band’s name was a tribute to filmmakers Stephen, Charles, and Edward Chiodo, responsible for the movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Their second full length album, Bone Palace Ballet, was released in North America on September 4, 2007 and debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on Top Independent Albums. Warner Bros. Records released Bone Palace Ballet on January 26, 2009, as part of a new distribution deal in the UK.

Chiodos was formed at the Flint Local 432, a small venue in downtown Flint, Michigan and Olde Jamestowne Hall in Saginaw, Michigan. The band is known for their on-stage performances which include controlled, high-pitched vocals from former lead singer, Craig Owens. Craig Owens has cited lead singer of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, etc. fame, Mike Patton as one of his greatest influences saying, “I only wish I could be as good as him.”

Their debut album, All’s Well That Ends Well (Equal Vision Records) was released on July 26, 2005. It reached #3 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and #164 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. While their sophomore album, Bone Palace Ballet reached the number 5 spot on the Billboard 200. The band’s albums and live performances have garnered praise from press outlets.

Chiodos headlined some shows on their own before joining Alternative Press’s 2006 “Invisible Sideshow” tour, headlined by Armor for Sleep. Following that tour, they supported Matchbook Romance on the Sub City “Take Action” tour in Spring 2006. That summer, they toured with Fear Before the March of Flames, as well as appearing on the Warped Tour.In fall 2006, Chiodos appeared on Atreyu’s World Championship Tour, alongside From First to Last and Every Time I Die, as well as 3 and 36 Crazyfists.

Chiodos has had several scuffs with those in the music industry, most notably Steven Smith of Steven’s Untitled Rock Show, Andy Williams of Every Time I Die, and HORSE The Band.

In 2005, Chiodos independently made a video for the song “All Nereids Beware.” The video consists of the band playing the rare pre-All’s Well That Ends Well version of the song in a parking lot.

In 2006, Chiodos made videos for “One Day Women Will All Become Monsters” and “Baby, You Wouldn’t Last a Minute on the Creek”. The “Baby, You Wouldn’t Last a Minute on the Creek” video was included on the 2006 re-issue of All’s Well That Ends Well, which added a DVD and three acoustic tracks to the 2005 release.

A video for “Lexington (Joey Pea-Pot With A Monkey Face)” was made which premiered world wide on April 2, 2008 on the social network MySpace. This was the first single of their sophomore album, “Bone Palace Ballet”. Chiodos’ drummer, Derrick Frost has stated in an interview that the band was disappointed in the final result of the music video, saying

“Well, usually there are different people who throw out ideas and we go through them and add in our own suggestions but that video definitely didn’t turn out like we wanted it to turn out, like at all. We’re pretty disappointed with it. We never get a video where we’re all like “This is amazing!” And that’s what every band wants, to have an amazing video because that can push your career and your band so far. And we haven’t gotten that yet so it’s kind of frustrating. It’s just like so much money that we spent on this for no reason. No one’s going to play it; it’s not getting played at all.”

On September 16, 2008, Chiodos teamed up with acclaimed director Darren Doane and The Crofoot Ballroom to shoot a video for “The Undertaker’s Thirst For Revenge Is Unquenchable (The Final Battle)” in downtown Pontiac, MI. The video was released on December 20, 2008.

on September 24, 2010, it was announced that Craig Owens was no longer the singer of Chiodos.

On February 8, 2010, Brandon Bolmer (Yesterdays Rising) was confirmed as the new lead singer for Chiodos.

At the Drive-In

El PasoUnited States (1993 – 2001, 2012 – present)

At the Drive-In is an American  band from El Paso, Texas, active from 1993 to 2001. They were known for their extremely energetic stage shows which hearkened back to the 1980s hardcore scene. They were also recognized for their blend of surrealistic lyrics, unorthodox guitar melodies and unpredictable shifts in tempo and rhythm.

Founded by Jim Ward (guitars) & Cedric Bixler Zavala (vocals - at the time a member of  band, foss, in which he played drums). ATD-I’s first studio recording was Hell Paso (Western Breed), an EP issued in 1994. They would play their first show on October 15, 1994 at The Loretto Fair with Catch Okra, an El Paso music group, in El Paso, Texas. Much touring would quickly develop a following as intense in loyalty as the band was on stage.

The band was also very determined to get shows in their early days, even going to the point where they would pretend to be a   band to be put on a local television show called “Let’s Get Real” in El Paso. At the Drive-In’s reputation for energetic live performances outlasted their career, a faint hint captured on various live video recordings. It was this reputation, the release of perhaps their best-known album (Relationship of Command) and their small hit radio single “One Armed Scissor” (which had a music video in circulation on MTV) that contributed largely to the very positive attention they received in the rock press towards the end of their career. Spin Magazine named Relationship of Command one of their top 10 albums of that year, and in 2010 NME placed it number 12 in its top 50 albums of the decade. The bands first nationally televised performance was on FarmClub. A now defunct television show which aired late at night on the USA network. After that performance they also appeared on Later with Jools Holland, Late Night With Conan O’Brien and The Late Show With David Letterman, performing their single “One Armed Scissor” on national television. According to some sources, At the Drive-In struggled to recreate their intense live experience in the studio. At one point they tried to circumvent this problem by recording their second CD, In/Casino/Out (), as a live studio album; this was in contrast to the band’s first album Acrobatic Tenement, which, although undoubtedly a  album, lacked the energy seen in later works.

Not only notoriously energetic and wild at shows, At the Drive-In were noted by the music press for the afros of Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. The hairstyle became synonymous with the pair’s image. However, the two have been very vocal about image. Omar said in one interview, “I hate photoshoots, I get so bored. The way I look has nothing to do with the music I make, so who cares if I have big glasses and an afro? People should just put on our CD.”

Breakup
In , at the peak of their popularity and following a world tour, At the Drive-In broke up, initially referring to the split as an “indefinite hiatus.”

Cedric Bixler took full responsibility for the breakup for the band, saying repeatedly in interviews that he felt almost as if ATDI were holding him back, and that he didn’t want his music to be confined to ‘punk’ or ‘’ or ‘hard-tits-core’ - that it should encompass many different genres and be even more, and “against-the-grain”. Bixler and Rodriguez-Lopez had stated that they wanted their next album to sound like Pink Floyd’s Piper at the Gates of Dawn, while the other members of the band were intent on progressing in a more typical rock direction. Following the break-up of ATDI, Omar and Cedric would start The Mars Volta. This project was a departure from their previous work, as it pursued the  sound that they had been interested in. Meanwhile, the other members of ATDI - Jim Ward, Paul Hinojos, and Tony Hajjar - would continue on to form the band Sparta. Hinojos has since left Sparta to join Bixler and Rodriguez in The Mars Volta as the Sound Manipulator (Keeley Davis has since become the new guitarist for Sparta). At the Drive-In’s  and emotional work made them unique amongst their contemporaries.

De Facto
De Facto (formerly De Facto Cadre Dub) was the alias for Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez’s/ side project since the early days of At the Drive-In. Essentially after ATD-I shows Cedric would play drums like he had in the El Paso Pussycat, Omar would play Bass as he did when he first joined ATD-I, and Ikey on keyboards back in El Paso, Texas (they relocated to Long BeachCA in 2001). The group’s ten-song full-length, Megaton Shotblast, appeared on GSL in late 2001. De Facto broke up when Jeremy Ward the vocalist (though there was little singing on their albums) and sound engineer died of a drug overdose in 2003.

Reunion
The 9th January 2012 the band announced on twitter a message, with these words: THIS STATION IS …NOW…OPERATIONAL. They will be playing the 2012 Coachella Music Festival.

LoveHateHero

At the end of 2008, LoveHateHero felt like it was time to step outside the boundaries they had created for themselves with their previous efforts. After building a solid fan base with their first two albums, Just Breathe and White Lies, which they had supported by touring nationally with such acts as Chiodos, Funeral for a Friend, and Scary Kids Scaring Kids, the band, despite all their hard work, felt like they had not quite hit their stride. Even after White Lies sold over 20,000 copies in the U.S. and drew the attention of magazines like Alternative Press and Outburn, something wasn’t quite right and they knew it.

While writing songs for their newest release America Underwater, the band retooled their sound. The result was a record that focuses more on their well-developed vocal melodies and cleanly polished hooks. Nearly reinventing themselves as a whole, the group dropped a lot of the edginess from their songs, using it sparingly instead of as a crutch to rest on. For this release, “maturing as songwriters” wasn’t just a cliché.

“Everyone’s better at what they’re doing so we were able to get more creative,” singer Pierrick Berube explains. “The album still holds true to the band’s sound but adds so much more depth, while at the same time being a more care free album.

“I think we concentrated more on songwriting and the material, what the songs are about,” Pierrick continues. “We wanted everything to be a complete song instead of just parts that shredded or were heavy. We didn’t want each song to be random riffs, we wrote complete songs that are just good songs. We simplified it but opened it up with vocal harmonies and music melodies in a way that we could have more fun.”

Backed by a phenomenal team including platinum selling pop/rock producers Daniel James and Leah Haywood at Dreamlab Productions, Grammy nominated mixing genius Brian Paturalski (Aerosmith, Silverchair), and mastering guru Ted Jensen (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Tokio Hotel, etc.), this four piece from the City of Angels is guaranteed to inspire those fans who have loved them before and win over those who never gave them a chance.

“Our producers work with a lot of pop acts, but they’ve always had a love for rock & roll,” Pierrick states. “It was a great learning experience to record with them. They are excellent songwriters and are really knowledgeable about song structure and it helped us a lot.”

When LoveHateHero was finished recording, they exited Dreamlab Productions with ten anthemic, pop-laced rock songs, powered by Pierrick’s signature vocals and Thrasher’s relentless guitar attack. With Scot Gee (drums) and Arthur “Paris” Bosserman (bass) solidifying the rhythm section, the band steamrolls forward with more passion and fervor than ever before.

LoveHateHero now looks to blast headfirst to the next level with the release of America Underwater immediately followed by endless touring to support the album while spreading their sound to new listeners. Look for them on tour this summer supporting the release of America Underwater.

As Cities Burn

As Cities Burn was a  (earlier material),  (midway) and  (later) band from Mandeville, LA that formed in 2002.

As an unsigned act, the group accomplished impressive success touring and selling thousands of copies of their two EPs. Their success drew the attention of Solid State Records, who signed them in 2004.

ACB released its first full length album, Son, I Loved You At Your Darkest, on June 21 of 2005, and was featured in Solid State’s Young Bloods Tour with The ChariotShowbread, and He Is Legend.

Earlier in the year, the band released a statement saying that vocalist TJ was getting married and leaving the band, so they decided to call it quits. However, partially through their ‘farewell tour’, they decided to stay together, but eventually T.J. decided to depart from the band and go his own way.

The band’s second album, titled “Come Now Sleep” was released August 14, 2007, on Tooth and Nail Records. Different from their previous recordings, however, the genre featured on Come Now Sleep has been classified by the band themselves as Rock / Indie / Progressive.

As Cities Burn’s third studio album was released on April 21, 2009, with the title “Hell or High Water”. The band’s music evolved even more with their final album, venturing into indie rock territory but while still maintaining their unique post-hardcore sound.

On the bands myspace on July 17, 2009, the band announced that they had broken up and were going to pursue other interests.

On August 30, 2011, As Cities Burn updated their Facebook status saying "Stay tuned for news regarding As Cities Burn." The band made a Twitter account shortly thereafter, through which they tweeted "Reunion show" followed by the hashtag #silyayd, which is an abbreviation for their album "Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest". Fans have assumed that this means a reunion show with the old lineup is in store for the band. They announced that they would be playing "Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest" in its entirety with TJ at Unsilent Night, a festival in Dallas, TX.

The Nation of Ulysses

Washington, D.C. (1988 – 1992)

The Nation Of Ulysses was a punk band from Washington, D.C. consisting of Ian Svenonius (Vocals/Trumpet), Steve Kroner (Lead Guitar), Tim Green (Rhythm Guitar), Steve Gamboa (Bass), James Canty (Drums). The band formed in the spring of 1988 drawing inspiration from MC5’s mix of revolutionary rhetoric and rock music. They released their first EP The Sound of Young America jointly on Dischord and K Records and further recordings included 13-Point Program To Destroy America (1991), and Plays Pretty For Baby (1992), both of which were released on Dischord Records.

Musically and stylistically, The Nation Of Ulysses had a tremendous influence on the underground punk rock and hardcore music scene in the early 90’s. Their music was noisy and manic, but they also had a strong free-jazz influence. The band was also notorious for their political pamphlets, called Ulysses Speaks, which they distributed at live shows, some of which are reproduced on their album covers. Their pamphlets espoused what they referred to as “The Ulysses Aesthetic” which was a mix of 60’s and 70’s radical politics, French Situationist writings, and juvenile delinquency. The group advocated a rejection of the 60’s and 70’s music and styling; rejecting drug use, and advocating that the punk youth dress nicely and sensibly. While this might seem to be a trivial point, it should be noted that not long after the Nation Of Ulysses toured the USA, the fashion sensibility of the post-hardcore scene, did indeed, change quite considerably, and this was a precursor to the thrift store chic fashion sensibility of the 90’s. Their revolutionary ideology was a huge influence on groups such as Refused and The (International) Noise Conspiracy, and on the riot grrrl movement of punk feminism which exploded in the early 90’s. Their song lyrics and writings were extremely sophisticated, erudite, and even humorous at times. However, they did address many issues concerning the underground music scene of the time, such as: corporate co-opting of the music scene, drug use, bad fashion, and poor grammar.

The Nation Of Ulysses disbanded in the fall of 1992 having failed to complete their third album. The finished tracks were later released as a collection known as The Embassy Tapes (2000).

Vocalist Ian Svenonius went on to form The Cupid Car Club with James Canty (on guitar) and Steve Gamboa (on drums), and later Make-Up and Weird War. Guitarist Tim Green went on to form the progressive heavy metal band The Fucking Champs. Canty, after the dissolution of The Make-Up, went on to form the explosive duo French Toast. Ian Svenonius is also an author now, having published “The Psychic Soviet” in 2006. The collection of works is a postmodernist satire about a variety of topics including politics, rock music, homosexuality, religion, materialism, and many other issues.

Later years, a low profile investigation, would ultimately send all of the known members of Nation of Ulysses to prison. We phrase it like this because the members were convicted of breaking child labor laws, whereas all of the brass horns and saxophones used in the production of their material were being played by 3rd and 4th graders against their will.

Greeley Estates

PhoenixUnited States (2002 – present)

Greeley Estates is a / band formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 2002.

While being in a post-hardcore band may not be extraordinarily unique, Greeley Estates pushes to the front of the pack as one of the few young bands putting the relationship with their fans above all else. Greeley Estates live shows go unparalleled. With a dynamic style reflecting numerous musical backgrounds, Greeley captures the audience and sears a lasting impression. Stripped to its core, the musical foundation reflects catchy melody and pop sensibility infinitely amplified by a hardcore edge and intense vocals.

Although Greeley Estates calls Arizona home, they are more often found navigating the pages of an atlas. In addition to performing nightly, Greeley emphasizes getting to know fans on a personal level, providing the human identity that is clearly evident in their lyrics and presence. Though Greeley Estates’ journey has just begun, they’ve already achieved unparalleled significance among their peers. They’ve completed 3 national tours including every date of Vans Warped Tour 2005. They’ve self-released a full length album Outside of This and a full length DVD The Death of Greeley Estates - both of which have garnered a top-five spot on SmartPunk’s overall sales rankings.

Celebrating their recent signing to Record Collection and the release of their second album, the EPCaveat Emptor, Greeley Estates co-headlined the MySpace Fall Tour 2005 . They returned to the studio in January 2006 to record their second full-length album and then continued touring on Taste of Chaos 2006. In a world of fabricated celebrity, people are finding honest authenticity in Greeley Estates - not only in their music and performance, but in their efforts, their character, and lives that serve as the foundation for their music.

On January 31, 2007, bassist Josh Applebach announced that he would leave Greeley Estates for a teaching career in Arizona. Bradley Murray (previously with Versus the Mirror) from Tucson, Arizona became their touring bassist. His first live appearance with the band was on February 3, 2007 in Safford, Arizona.

On June 3, 2007, guitarist Dallas Smith announced that he would be leaving the band in order to start up a family with his wife and expected twin daughters (he and his wife were to subsequently lose the pregnancy). He made this announcement via a MySpace bulletin and announced that his last show would be June 20, 2007 at the Clubhouse in Tempe, Arizona.

After their Mexican tour with Silverstein, Brad Murray left the band for personal reasons.

On September 4, 2007, Greeley Estates recorded their new album. The two new members of Greeley Estates include Alex Torres (previously with Eyes Set To Kill) and Joshua Ferguson (previously withGlory Nights)

After the band finished recording their new album Go West Young Man, Let The Evil Go East, Joshua Ferguson left to complete his apprenticeship as a hair stylist at BLACK MARKET HAIR in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; personal reasons seem to be why he left.

Greeley Estates had announced Tyler “Telle” SMith as their new bassist, who was formerly of In Fear and Faith. Telle played his first show with the band on February 9, 2008, at the Clubhouse in Tempe, Arizona.

In 2003 Greeley Estates had a track, entitled “Let The Evil Go East”, on the Warped Tour 2008 compilation album.

Their latest album titled Go West Young Man, Let The Evil Go East was released May 6, 2008. For the track “Blue Morning” on their new album, Greeley Estates hired music video director Daniel Chesnut to create a high energy, intense video, to match the band’s new persona.

On Friday, November 14, 2008, Greeley Estates announced that their newest bassist “Telle”, found within the course of the same year, had left the band. The blog on their MySpace stated:

“Once again, the curse of the Greeley bass players… has struck again! Eight hours before leaving for the Alesana tour, Telle told us that he would no longer be in Greeley Estates. But don’t fret! We will not be missing any shows… we could never do that to you guys/girls! Our tour manager Dave is filling in last minute for us. This means, you all need to come out and sing louder than ever. See you soon!!!!”

Ryan Zimmerman of Greeley Estates told AMP Magazine, "We’re thinking of kind of combining the last two records, Go West and No Rain, to kind of bring back some singing and have a little bit of melody but still have the heavy. I’m not sure yet on the lyrical direction."
"I think it’s a new challenge. I think trying to do something that we didn’t do on the record before-we want to have a little bit of a shock value each time. The last two albums were a shock to people as far as what was coming from Greeley Estates. We started off some of early albums with pop songs so we’ve changed a lot over the years but we want to kind of have that same approach going into this record too. We just want to try and figure out what we can do to combine the things we know our fans love and what we love to perform but also do something a little different."
The fifth album is expected to be released summer 2011, with producer Cory Spotts, who also produced the band's very first album Outside of This in 2004.
On June 1, 2011 the first single to the new album was released on the band's Facebook page, titled "The Last Dance." They have also announced that the album is titled The Death of Greeley Estates. The album was expected to be released August 2, but was changed to August 9, 2011. The cover art for the album was released on the band's Twitter. On June 7, another new song, "Friendly Neighborhood Visit" was released on Altpress. On July 7 the first track on the album titled "Straitjacket" was released on the band's Facebook page. The new album will be released a week early for fans to purchase at their tour. Greeley Estates has stated that they will be working on their upcoming sixth album next year in 2012.
